Ear correction

Surgical approach

Otoplasty

Ear reduction surgery (otoplasty) is usually performed when a child has reached school age. It is also performed on adults who have often hidden their embarrassing ears for years.

Surgery details

This operation is not as simple as it sounds! The aim of this surgery is to push the ears back towards the head while keeping their natural appearance, and without making them too irregular or too flat. The incisions are hidden behind the ears. The cartilage is carefully reshaped and replaced with several permanent stitches.

Duration: Otoplasty lasts about two hours.

Anesthesia... without general anesthesia

A local anesthetic with sedation is used for your otoplasty, if you are an adult. Therefore, plastic ear surgery is performed by Dr. Fanous on adults without the need for general anesthesia. For children, however, general anesthesia is required. You can go home the same day as your ear surgery.

After an Ear Correction

Recovery time

Recovery time varies from person to person, but you should be able to resume many of your regular activities after about one to two weeks.

The two ears may not look exactly alike after the operation. In any case, the two ears are rarely identical. One or two of these sutures may be rejected later by the body and are easily removed, but usually the shape of the ears remains unchanged.

Possible complications

Risks

As with any other aesthetic surgical procedure, complications are possible but infrequent: infection, bleeding, excessive scarring, sensory changes, skin necrosis, asymmetry, numbness, pain, rejection of stitches, and so on.
