Laser hair removal

Laser hair removal

Surgical approach

"Mini-incision" technique

Laser hair removal at our institute uses the "Candela" machine. This is a high-energy, long-pulse laser that emits a gentle beam of light.

"Candela" laser hair removal

This light passes through the skin to target the follicle, which is then destroyed. The laser's energy is transformed into heat, enabling the follicle to be removed.

During treatment, the skin is protected by a dynamic cooling process. A cool jet is used to cool the upper layers of the skin, resulting in greater comfort for the patient.

Time: Facial and bikini areas are usually done in 10-15 minutes. Legs and larger areas take longer.

Sensation during laser hair removal

Most patients experience slight discomfort at the treatment site. An "Emla" anesthetic cream can be used for sensitive patients.

After treatment

Recovery time

There is no recovery time. Immediately after treatment, the patient can go home. The treated surface may be pinkish, reddish or brownish for a few hours to a few days.

Benefits

Traditional hair removal techniques such as shaving or waxing provide only temporary relief. Until now, the only semi-permanent way to remove hair has been electrolysis, which is painful, time-consuming and limited to small areas of skin. Allergic reactions and ingrown hairs are possible side effects of these hair removal methods.

Ideal candidates

The best results are obtained on people with fair skin but dark hair. So, in the case of dark skin, the result is more limited. Many other factors can influence the treatment process and are discussed with you in person before treatments begin. Treatment generally includes:

  • protection for the patient's eyes during laser use.
  • a small handpiece that distributes the laser light by touching the skin.
  • a light, refreshing jet that is felt on the skin just before each pulse, followed by an audible 'beep' when the laser has reached the treated follicle.
About 6 treatments

Number of treatments

Hair grows in cycles: an "active" phase followed by a "dormant" phase, and so on. The number of treatments depends on your skin type, color and hair strength. Approximately 6 treatments are required, since the procedure is only effective on hairs in the "active" phase of growth. Repeated sessions will therefore be necessary to treat follicles that were in the "dormant" phase and are now re-entering the growth phase. Darker skin tones and lighter hair types require a greater number of treatments.

Precautions to be taken before and after treatment

Avoid the sun for 4 to 6 weeks before and after treatment. If you suffer from lip herpes, an antiviral prophylactic will be prescribed.

Risks

Possible complications

Like any other skin procedure, temporary or permanent complications are possible but uncommon: infection, inflammatory reaction, skin discoloration (hypopigmentation, hyperpigmentation), redness, scarring, limited results, etc.
